Welcome to a new week of The Nearly Constant Gardener. Our weekend was filled with the sort of quirky weirdness that has come with the territory of East Austin gardening/poultry husbandry. As I mentioned very briefly last week, we have two new (and still unnamed for now) chickens. I was concerned that they would not be welcomed to the backyard by what remained of our established flock, Patrick the Duck and Gloria.
Turns out, I had nothing to worry about on that front. As a matter of fact, Patrick loves the new chickens. A lot. I was afraid he was going to kill the little Americauna every time he could catch her to love her. Luckily, she can fly and he can't (he's too fat).
So, out of concern for the new hens I have decided to separate him for the time being. Patrick now lives in the little coop that is normally reserved for a broody hen but is now empty thanks to the peacock fiasco. And, later this morning I'm going to try to find a new duck lady friend for Patrick in the hopes that, provided some same-species companionship, he'll lay off our chickens.
On a completely unrelated note, the lost tomatoes that sprang up uninvited (but not unwelcome) in what I call our bathroom flower bed (because the bathroom window overlooks it) have started to ripen. It is now clear that these are the typical Roma plum tomatoes that you buy in any grocery store. I guess some seeds from a grocery store tomato came through the compost system no worse for wear and made into the soil I mixed for this bed.
The worthless squirrels infesting my backyard haven't discovered these plum tomatoes. Yet. |
And for no other reason than I like the way it looks, I took this picture of a pre-glory morning glory flower.
I think the swirling white stripes on this unopened morning glory are pretty sharp. |
